This is probably one of the more visual, but I think it’s important just that they see us, they learn who we are, and what we do.” A lot of our other departments in the county do other things, too. And I think community outreach for fire departments is really good. “The education part of it, we have little fun with them, that sort of thing. Rarely will you see water because a lot of times people think ‘throw water on the fire, it’s good.’ Sometimes it’s really bad.” That’s the most common so that’s about all they carry,” Glander said of extinguishers. “The good thing is just about anything you can buy at Walmart, any of those those big stores, is an ABC. And that’s kind of what I was talking to them about was, you know, don’t be afraid of it but respect it.” “And these little kids, I don’t like putting them that close to the fire but when they feel the heat they have a respect for it. “It’s important to educate them at this level,” Glander said of the children who participated. And those statistics are tracked by the state.” We have to actually report that in the fire report. They don’t have them or the battery’s dead. “And unfortunately, probably about 60 percent of those don’t. When a fire occurs, part of the investigation seeks to find out if a household had any sort of fire suppression equipment. In the kitchen – it’s good to have a small one, you know for small kitchen fires and things like that.” “But then you should have one of these in a garage or an outbuilding where you’ve got flammable liquid stored. Smoke detectors are the most important fire safety tools to have in a home, according to Glander, along with carbon monoxide detectors. “If somebody can mitigate that fire, in the first five to 10 minutes, it saves us a whole lot of work and then a whole lot of loss,” he added. He’s also trained small family groups who reach out after seeing the training on Facebook. This is our second year doing the Historical Society.”
We’ve started doing industrial - Brubaker Grain actually has us come do it every year. So if we can get people to stop that kitchen fire, we don’t have to show up on a fully involved house fire.”
